Potassium nitrate sprays improve early fruit ripening in strawberries

In strawberry, hydrogen cyanamide (CH) and potassium nitrate (NP) can be used to interrupt dormancy. To study the effects of these substances, four experiments were conducted in Spain to find the most appropriate product, dosage and application period. In one of these experiments with 3.0% potassium nitrate and 0.5% CH, potassium nitrate produced the earliest harvest (P=0.05), but total yield was similar. The average fruit weight of plants treated with potassium nitrate and CH was higher than control plants at the end of the season, but no significant differences in early yield were detected (Table 1).
