SQM port facilities achieve Responsible Care® certification
6-11-2024
The historic port of Tocopilla, a strategic shipping point for SQM's products to the world, is a crucial link in the company's production chain. It has evolved to meet the growing demands of the sector, aspiring to achieve international sustainability standards, with a focus on people, the community and the environment. These initiatives are part of its commitment to the international Responsible Care® program, promoted in Chile by the Asociación de Industriales Químicos (ASIQUIM).
After a series of exhaustive audits, ASIQUIM confirmed that the port complies with the six fundamental principles of this initiative, granting the Responsible Care certification, which positions SQM among a select group of chemical companies that exceed legal compliance in matters of safety, health, environment and corporate social responsibility.
Responsible Care® is a voluntary commitment of the global chemical industry that is aligned with SQM's Sustainability Plan. This commitment encompasses six key principles: continuous improvement in health, safety and environment; efficient use of resources; dialogue and collaboration with neighboring communities; and promotion of responsible chemicals management.
As part of its sustainability strategy, SQM has defined a roadmap focused on three main milestones: Responsible Care verification in 2021, obtaining ISO 14,000 certification in the second half of 2021, and the goal of achieving Eco Port certification in 2022, awarded by the Association of European Ports. This process is marked by a distinctive focus on sustainability, aligned with the company's values.
Action Plan
SQM highlights that the progress achieved in verification and certifications is the result of improved management through the Lean M1 methodology and the implementation of an investment plan. This plan has allowed the modernization of the facilities, with the expansion of storage areas, the construction of enclosed sheds, and the expansion of conveyor belts, which has extended the useful life and reliability of the mechanized arm, considered one of the most valuable assets of the port and a symbol of SQM's productive identity in Tocopilla.
In terms of sustainability, the company has implemented campaigns aimed at the efficient use of energy and water, together with a plan to reduce and recycle industrial waste. It seeks to maximize the life cycle of materials such as blankets, plastics and wooden pallets, promoting the circular economy and establishing a waste reduction goal.
