The Chilean company, a world leader in the production of specialty fertilizers and iodine, obtained a new international certification: ISO 50001:2018, which establishes global standards to effectively manage energy consumption, reduce costs and improve its environmental performance.

This milestone recognizes SQM's ongoing commitment to excellence in energy management and underscores its proactive approach to sustainability and operational efficiency, which reflects the company's commitment to business sustainability, and as part of the exercise of listening to its stakeholders to respond to new environmental, social and governance demands and expectations.

Ignacio Majluf, SQM's Nitrates - Iodine Management and Sustainability Manager, noted: "This achievement reflects our commitment to optimizing our processes, reducing our environmental footprint and promoting responsible operational practices.

The executive added: "Law 21,305 on energy efficiency encourages us to decouple energy consumption from economic growth. To achieve this, we are continuously advancing in our energy performance and in this way we will not only improve our competitiveness, but also contribute to climate change mitigation, demonstrating to our customers, collaborators and stakeholders that we are committed to sustainable and responsible practices".

Adrián Becerra, SQM's Nitrates Iodine Sustainability Leader, noted: "By adopting international standards, we not only improve our operational efficiency, but also demonstrate to our customers, employees and stakeholders that we are committed to sustainable and responsible practices that are in harmony with the environment.

Meanwhile, Rodrigo Godoy, leader of SQM's Energy Management System, points out that "Because it is a process of continuous improvement, we know that today we have climbed a step and that we have many more to go. However, the skills, motivation and good ideas of the work teams in the field and in the offices and the leadership of senior management will make the challenge a good opportunity".

Other certifications:

This new international certification strengthens SQM's sustainability strategy, as it joins other certifications obtained such as: Responsible Care, ISO 14001:2015 environmental management systems, and Ecoport, which is the leading environmental initiative for the European port sector and offers a series of environmental management tools based on global standards and voluntary commitments that exceed regulatory requirements, among other alliances and certifications linked to operational excellence, continuous improvement and sustainability.
