The desert is beginning to turn agricultural

Hand in hand with local communities, alfalfa — a key crop for Aymara livestock breeders — is already being produced in Tarapacá. Blueberries are being tested under different conditions and pomegranates and dates are being evaluated. According to SQM Plant Nutrition, the promoters of these initiatives, the projection is that by 2030 production will increase tenfold from what exists today (60 hectares), with crops that will provide farmers with the tools they need for future development.
